ARUNDEL — Detectives with the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit are investigating the death of Matthew Coito, 63, whose body was found inside his single-family dwelling at 45 Campground Road at mid-afternoon today.

Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said Coito’s wife, Sue Kim Coito, 65, who has Alzheimer’s disease, is unaccounted for, and police are searching for her in the area behind the home. He said the search will expand Thursday if she is not found tonight. Sue Kim Coito is 5-feet, 2-inches tall, weighs 130 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.

He said it appeared Matthew Coito, whose body was foubnd in the kitchen,  had been dead for several days. McCausland said the death is suspicious, but declined to be more specific.

Relatives hadn’t heard from the couple since the weekend and went to check on them today. After finding Coito’s body inside his home, they called  York County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office, in turn, called state police for assistance in the death investigation.

Details were sparse Wednesday — the Major Crimes Unit arrived on the scene around 5 p.m.

Authorities said no one else was in the home when the body was found.

Kandis Hayes, who lives next door, said the couple were quiet people, and could be seen walking their dog, named Bay, daily. She said the neighborhood kids liked playing with the dog.

“They were a nice couple,” said Hayes. “They kept to themselves.”

While Campground Road is busy during commuting hours, most times of the day, it is quiet, said Hayes.

“Not much ever happens around here,” she said.

Several people, who may have been family members, were gathered at the edge of the property Wednesday afternoon, and were speaking with sheriff’s deputies.

State police detectives were expected to be on the scene for most of the night. An autopsy is expected to take place Thursday.
