Maine drug enforcement agents say they have busted another methamphetamine lab, in Sanford, the ninth operation discovered in the state this year.

Herbert Winship, 40, and his 18-year-old nephew, Tanner Winship, were arrested in connection with the lab in an apartment at 29 Charles St., said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

McCausland said Sanford police and agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency arrested Tanner Winship on Monday on a charge of operating a meth lab. Herbert Winship was arrested Tuesday in Lyman by Maine State Police on charges of operating a meth lab and violating terms of his probation.

Both Sanford men were being held Tuesday night in the York County Jail on $15,000 cash bail. Herbert Winship is not eligible for release because of the probation violation. They are scheduled to make their first court appearance Wednesday in Springvale District Court.

McCausland said law enforcement officials got suspicious Sunday evening after Sanford police investigated reports of a noxious odor coming from the Charles Street building. The MDEA’s meth lab team responded and found evidence of meth manufacturing in the apartment, including a Mason jar that contained the addictive drug.

A few hours later, Sanford police were called to an adjacent property on Grove Street to investigate a suspicious duffel bag. Inside the bag, officers found ingredients to make meth, and a plastic bottle where meth was being cooked.

Last year, the MDEA investigated 125 meth lab operations.
