More than 80 workers in Shaw’s Supermarkets distribution center in Wells have voted to join the Teamsters union.
The 81 drivers and mechanics joined Teamsters Local 340, following a March 1 organizing election, according to a release from the Teamsters.
The workers are seeking job security and disciplinary due process, in addition to a contract that will protect their wages, benefits and working conditions from the uncertainties of the corporate workplace, said Local 340 President Brett Miller in the release.
Osco pharmacists working inside Shaw’s stores joined the Teamsters last spring.
Shaw’s Supermarkets, which was founded in Portland in 1860, is Maine’s 11th-largest private employer, with between 2,000 and 2,500 workers, according to the Maine Department of Labor.
In 2013 it was acquired by AB Acquisition, also the parent company of supermarket chains Albertson’s and Safeway. Shaw’s operates 154 stores throughout New England.
