A Madison man was arrested Monday morning after a woman called police to allege that he had threatened to kill her with a weapon that turned out to be hatchet.
Roger Vitalone, 32, was arrested at 9:30 a.m. on Park Street on two domestic violence charges and a criminal threatening charge.
Somerset County Sheriff’s Deputy Chelsea Merry responded to the call and learned that the couple was having ongoing problems, according to a news release sent by Deputy Sheriff James Ross.
An argument had escalated between the two and Vitalone allegedly picked up a camping hatchet and moved toward the woman while threatening to kill her, according to the release. Deputy Merry spoke with Vitalone, confirming what had happened, and found the hatchet hidden on the porch, according to the release.
Vitalone’s two children, ages 3 and 6, were also at the residence at the time of the incident but were in a different room, according to Ross. Merry referred the case to the Department of Health and Human Services.
Vitalone was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony; domestic violence assault, a class D misdemeanor; and domestic violence terrorizing, a class D misdemeanor.
