The Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine is reportedly moving to the Thompson’s Point development on the Fore River in Portland.
Suzanne Olson, the museum’s executive director, could not be reached for comment Wednesday night, but said in a statement issued to WGME-TV earlier in the day that the museum “has outgrown its Free Street facility and is bursting at the seams. Our staff, board and stakeholders agree that the time is right to relocate to a new, purpose-built space.”
Chris Thompson, the developer of Thompson’s Point, told the television station that the museum hopes to break ground in 2018 and to open in 2020.
Neither Olson nor Thompson responded to phone messages and emails Wednesday night.
Thompson told WGME that he is working with the museum on getting permits from the city.
In 2008, the Children’s Theater of Maine merged with the Children’s Museum. The children’s museum was founded in 1976 by the Junior League of Portland.
Thompson’s Point already features an outdoor skating rink, the International Cryptozoology Museum, Circus Maine, outdoor concerts and a distillery.
