State high school skiing championships were held over the past week, with local skiers hitting the slopes.

At the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, Freeport was in State Class B Nordic action. The Falcon boys had a solid showing, finishing second behind state champion Maranacook.

Led by Yacob Olins, who finished second in the classical and third in the freestyle, Freeport finished with 60 points, with the Black Bears of Readfield earning 45. Yarmouth (128) was third, Caribou (131) fourth and Mt. Abram (153) fifth.

Other top-10 finishers for Freeport were Bennett Hight (seventh, classical; fourth, freestyle) and John Giddens (eighth, classical; 10th, freestyle).

In the girls meet, Maranacook made it a sweep, edging Yarmouth 43-55. Freeport was third with 111 points, with Caribou (128) and Mt. Abram (223) rounding out the top five.

Lily Horne was fifth in both the classical and freestyle races, while Allison Greuel was ninth in the two events.

Freeport also earned the Class B Sportsmanship Award for both the boys and the girls.

Class A Nordic

Though no local team had enough skiers to qualify for the team scores, there were still a few solid performances overall at Quarry Road in Waterville.

Morse’s Jennifer Wilbraham skied her way to second place in the 5.5-kilometer skate, finishing in 19:05, just behind the winning pace of Mt. Blue’s Julia Ramsey.

Wilbraham also claimed ninth in the classic in 25:52.4.

Skiing for Brunswick was Erin Coughlin in 18th (skate) and 26th (classic), while Mt. Ararat’s Anna Jackson was 46th in the skate and 47th in the classic.

On the boys side, Mikail Tipton was 21st in the skate and 28th in the classic, with Mt. Ararat’s Hayden Libby 42nd in the skate and 44th in the classic.

Mt. Blue won both the boys and girls State Class A titles.

Alpine

Camden Hills (girls) and Falmouth (boys) won the State Class A Alpine championships at Mt. Abram.

Annesley Black of Cheverus captured both the slalom and giant slalom for the girls, while Axel Lindsay of Greely was tops on the boys side in the slalom, while Cape Elizabeth’s Devon Lathrop won the giant slalom.

In the girls race, Freeport was 11th with 447 points. Isabella Cyr, Kaia Williams and Margaret Murray competed for the Falcons.

Alexandra Wagner was the lone Brunswick skier.

The Freeport boys finished 10th with 371 points. Aaron Rusiecki, Paul Biberstein, Parker Landsbergen, Liam Grogan and Eero Pandora hit the slopes, while Brunswick’s Ryan Duffy, Ben Donsback and Elliot Slocum competed.
