GORHAM — Scarborough senior Sam Rusak won three events and set a state record in the pole vault Monday at the University of Southern Maine to power the Red Storm to their seventh Class A boys’ indoor track state championship in nine years.
The Red Storm finished with 102.25 points, well ahead of Westbrook (46) and Deering (40).
In the girls’ meet, Scarborough freshman Emily Labbe scored 26 points to lift the Red Storm to their eighth title overall, but their first since 2012. Scarborough collected 88 points, while Cheverus was second with 61 and Thornton Academy was third with 37.
Rusak fouled out of the pole vault without clearing a height his sophomore year, but the multi-event star has since won nine individual state titles, including outdoor track.
Rusak won the 200 meters in 22.99 seconds, just edging freshman teammate Jarett Flaker. Rusak also won the high jump (6-0), then capped the meet with his record vault of 16-3.
Rusak secured the win at 15 feet before methodically going after the state record, clearing 15-5 and 15-9 as some 100 spectators and athletes stayed in the field house for the lone remaining competitor.
“That was probably a 16-foot vault. That was beautiful,” said Gorham girls’ coach John Caterina as he watched Rusak clear 15-5 on his first attempt.
Rusak broke the 2008 record of 16-21/4 set by Brunswick’s David Slovenski. Rusak said afterward he wanted a state record to leave his mark in Maine before going on to compete on a full track scholarship at the University of Connecticut.
Rusak had plenty of help from his teammates, as several underclassmen excelled.
Besides his second-place finish in the 200, Flaker won the 55 (6.68) and anchored the winning 800 relay team (1:33.81). Ben Hatch, also a freshman, took third in the 55 (6.80) and led off the 800 relay.
Anthony Clavette, a sophomore, tied for third in the high jump (5-8).
Scarborough also got a lift from Ben Batoosingh, a senior who won the 400 (52.44), took third in the 200 (23.29) and was part of the 800 relay.
“There were always teammates at Scarborough I looked up to. It’s amazing to finish like this and see my peers do amazing things,” Rusak said. “I could not be more happy right now.”
Brewer senior Austin Lufkin broke a 40-year-old state record in the shot put. His throw of 61-2, wiped out the 1977 mark of 59-10 set by Ed Bogdanovich of Portland.
“I worked on building strength in my legs,” Lufkin said. “That is probably the No. 1 reason I have more power. People think the shot put is all upper body, but the power is from your legs.”
The girls’ meet also had several dominant performances by freshmen. Scarborough Coach Ron Kelly said in his 44 years coaching, it was the best freshman class he’s had on his team.
“There are so many different ways to win,” Kelly said. “But there was so much freshman talent at this state meet, probably the most I’ve seen.”
Labbe won the 55 (7.47) and took second in both the 55 hurdles (8.79) and 200 (26.98).
Anna Gardner, another Scarborough freshman, tied for second in the pole vault (10-0) with senior teammate Edie Christian.
Bethany Sholl, a junior, won the 2-mile (11:40.31) for the Red Storm and senior Ellen Shaw took third in the hurdles (8.82) and anchored Scarborough’s winning 800 relay (1:49.45).
Cheverus had its own outstanding freshman, Emma Gallant, who captured the 200 (26.48) and 400 (58.86) and finished third in the 55 (7.48).
Westbrook sophomore Nyagoa Bayak was also a double winner, capturing the high jump (5-6) and triple jump (37-03/4).
South Portland junior Juliana Selser set a Class A record in the 800, taking the lead from the gun and winning by four seconds (2:16.82). She broke the 2013 record set by Deering’s Edie Pallozzi (2:17.27).
“We never really talked about the state record,” said South Portland Coach Karen Reardon. “She was looking at the qualifying time for nationals. She didn’t get it, but she’ll be seeded well at New Englands. This was a nice time.”
