AUGUSTA (AP) — The Maine Secretary of State says a drive to get a question on the 2017 ballot about a potential casino in the southern part of the state has succeeded.
Matthew Dunlap says on Monday that a citizens’ initiative petition to allow slot machines or a casino in York County has submitted the required number of signatures to qualify for the ballot this year.
The petitions began circulating in December 2015 and submitted nearly 65,000 signatures last month. State workers verified them and found that more than 52,000 of them were valid.
That crosses the threshold when added to more than 35,000 signatures submitted previously.
The Maine Senate last year rejected a bill to create a casino in Cumberland or York counties.
