LIMINGTON — A car veered off the road Saturday night, hitting a utility pole when the driver took her eyes off the road to pick up her purse from the floor.

Sheriff’s deputies and Limington Fire and Rescue responded to a one-vehicle crash around 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the vicinity of 593 Ossipee Trail, according to a press release from York County Sheriff Bill King.

Upon arrival, deputies found a 2012 Toyota Tundra pick-up truck off the shoulder of the east bound lane with part of a utility pole resting in the bed of the truck, according to King. The rest of the pole and transformer were in the east bound lane of the street blocking traffic, and wires were strewn across both lanes, preventing flow of traffic.

Amanda Knight, 34, of Hiram, was driving the truck. She had one passanger, Steven Nelson, 32, also of Hiram, who was the registered owner of the truck, according to King.

It appears Knight was driving east on Ossipee Trail when she had taken her eyes off the road momentarily to  retrieving her purse from the floor of the vehicle, according to King. The truck drifted to the right, off the main road and struck the utility pole, said King, and the pole snapped into two pieces as a result of the impact.

Ossipee Trail was shut down for about five hours, King said.

Neither Knight or Nelson were injured, King said.
