‘Twas the day of the Superbowl, and all through the town, athletes lent a helping hand to friends and neighbors, while day-dreaming of touchdowns.

Once a season, the Biddeford sports teams participate in a weekend of volunteer activity to give back to their community, an idea tackled by Biddeford Athetic Director, Dennis Walton. Walton says that the weekend is about enabling students to show appreciation for their community and to give back through community service and volunteerism.

The boys hockey team (currently fifth-seed in Class A South) could be seen with Coach Jason Tremblay, moving old appliances and cleaning out St. Andres Church.  The wrestling team visited the City Theatre to help organize and assemble storage racks. The boys and girls basketball teams removed litter from our parks, wiping out the aftermath of WinterFest.

Winter volunteer weekend’s official kickoff was Friday, when jersey-clad athletes and cheerleaders brought extra spirit to a Superbowl party at the Monarch Center. Students and residents played table hockey, watched football together and laughed. Walton said, “the kids love it,” and is already coordinating plans for the spring sports volunteer weekend.
