LYMAN — On Saturday, anglers of all ages can get out on the ice and compete at the second annual Goodwin’s Mills Firefighter Relief Association fishing derby.
The ice derby will be held from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Kennebunk Pond Boat Launch. The cost to enter is $18 for adults, $10 for children 16 and younger, and $35 for families. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Goodwin’s Mills Fire Station, 481 Goodwin’s Mills Road. Ticket sales end 7 a.m. on the day of the event.
All fish must be measured at the boat launch, according to the rules of the event. There will be prizes given in children’s and adult categories. Winners must attend the awards ceremony at 2:45 p.m. at the boat launch the day of the event, according to the rules. Door prizes will also be awarded.
The derby is a fundraiser for Goodwin’s Mills Firefighter Relief Association, or GMFRA.
GMFRA is a benevolent organization that is a separate legal entity from Goodwin’s Mills Fire and Rescue serves the towns of Dayton and Lyman. The organization is funded solely on donations and fundraising efforts.
Membership is made up mostly of current firefighters, former firefighters and spouses of fire fighters. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the fire station.
“Our membership is open to anyone in the communities that is interested in helping to preserve the history of the department, supporting the members of the department and helping the communities whenever possible,” said GMFRA President Normand Bilodeau.
A high priority of the association is the preservation of a 1953 Chevy fire truck, said Bilodeau. The truck has been in numerous parades and has been used many times during funerals, said Bilodeau.
The association also funds flags and solar lights at the fire station’s monument, firefighter memorial flags, sponsors a firefighters awards banquet, assists at firefighter funerals, sponsors a chili cook-off between four area fire departments and helps provide food to fire and rescue personnel at major incidents.
Board of directors member Phil Daniels said at a recent meeting the organization hopes to raise about $10,000 this year and is organizing fundraisers throughout the year. One idea the association has, pending approval from local select boards, is hosting children’s birthday parties at the fire station.
The association is hosting a paint night fundraiser at Painting with a Twist in Saco from 7-9 p.m. April 20. For more information, go to the Goodwin’s Mills Firefighters Relief Association page on Facebook.
