GORHAM — Paced by standout freshman Adela Kalilwa, the University of Southern Maine women’s indoor track and field team took the top spot among the seven teams competing Saturday at the USM Open III meet held at the Costello Sports Complex field house.
The Huskies tallied 221 points to outdistance runner up Bates, which totaled 130.5 points. Merrimack College was close behind in third with 121.50 points, followed by Smith College with 85 and Emmanuel College with 41.
Kalilwa won three individual events including the 200 meters in a time of 27.16 seconds, the long jump with a leap of 16-10 and the triple jump with a mark 35-11.
Other individual winners for USM on the track included senior Jasmine Boyle of Brunswick in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.54, and the 4×200 relay team, which included former Mt. Ararat standout Liz O’Neal.
On Friday at Boston University, Boyle won the one-mile run and O’Neal helped the 4×400 relay team to wins at the Terrier Classic.
Boyle ran the mile in 5:11.93, while the relay squad finished in 4:01.94.
The Huskies are back in action on Friday, hosting the annual State of Maine Indoor Championships at the Costello Sports Complex.
