A bit of snow is on the way and will impact the morning commute Wednesday, but the snow won’t be heavy.  This isn’t a big storm. By the time it ends most areas will see around 2 inches on the ground. A few areas may go up to 3 inches while areas further west, like the foothills, remain closer to just an inch.  

Expect light snowfall Wednesday over central and southern Maine.

Snow will break out as early as 10 p.m. Tuesday across the extreme southern part of the area, but could take until 3 a.m to  5 a.m before reaching Portland and further north. I do expect 1 to 2 inches of snow to be on the ground by the end of the Wednesday morning commute, making for slippery travel. Plan on it taking longer than usual to arrive at work or school.

The reason for the snow is a clipper type system moving across southern New England from the west. This system doesn’t have a lot of moisture with it. Most of the higher snow totals will be across southern New England. If you have plans to head south of Maine later today be aware it will be slow traveling, especially this evening.

Since temperatures are cold, the snow will be light and fluffy. This means the snow will also have more air and can amount to a bit more than it would if it was 32 degrees. In that case, I would be forecasting about 50 percent less snowfall as it would be heavier.

Cold air returns for the end of the week and weekend, but it will be dry. Highs won’t reach freezing Friday or for the weekend. It won’t be arctic air either, just typical early February cold.

There’s been talk about a storm potentially arriving Sunday night and Monday. The weather jury is still in deliberations on which way to go with this storm. As we get closer to the weekend, I am confident we will have a verdict. Until then it’s wait and see.
