The Westbrook Police Department confirmed that a device that appeared to be an improvised explosive device was a training device accidentally left behind by National Guard soldiers who were also training in the area.

The inert device was discovered while the police department was conducting K-9 training Monday near the Westbrook arterial. The discovery of the device, which consisted of PVC pipe, tape, wires and a cellphone, prompted a response by the Portland police bomb squad, which X-rayed the device to determine it was inert.

The device was unintentionally left behind by a soldier with the Maine Army National Guard when they conducted a training session there Oct. 2, 2016, the Westbrook Police Department said.
