PORTLAND – The Maine Red Claws lost a nail bitter to the Greensboro Swarm on Friday night at the Portland Expo, 98-97. Maine came into the game on a 1 game losing streak, and dropped to (18-11) on the season after the loss. Greensboro came into this game also on a 1 game losing streak, but improved their record to (9-19) after the win. 

In the 1st quarter Maine started the game on an 10-0 run fueled by a pair of three pointers by Jalen Jones and Coron Williams, before Swarm head coach Noel Gillespie called a full time out. With 6:52 left in the quarter the Swarm climbed back into the game going on their own 9-0 run making the score 10-9 in favor of Maine. At 2:53 left to play in the 1st, Maine led the Swarm by a score of 24-20. Maine closed the quarter strong, going on their second 10-point run of the game to lead 34-22.

In the 2nd Greensboro jumped out early on an 8-0 run to close the lead down to 34-30. 6:50 left in the 2nd quarter and the Swarm cut the lead to 38-37 after a bucket under the hoop from Perry Ellis. The Swarm were on a 15-4 run mid-way through the 2nd meanwhile Maine hadn’t scored since the 9:06 mark. With 2:43 left in the half, Maine jumped back out to a 49-43 lead after falling behind Greensboro 40-38 after a slow offensive start. Maine finished the quarter strong offensively, and clung to a 56-53 halftime lead. Abdel Nader paved the way for the Red Claws scoring 15 first half points. Perry Ellis scored 14 points for the Swarm.

In the 3rd quarter both teams started well shooting the three ball, and at 9:00 Maine held a 63-58 lead over the Swarm. With 7:45 left in the 3rd, Archie Goodwin made a layup to tie the game at 64-64. With 3:00 left in the 3rd, the Red Claws who fell behind 70-68, tied the game at 70-70 up with a layup from Arthur Edwards. Maine closed the quarter out taking a 1 point lead into the 4th, 75-74. Through 3 quarters Nader led the Red Claws with 16 points. Archie Goodwin led the Swarm with 19 points after 3.

To start the 4th quarter Ryan Kelly converted an and one for Maine, which pushed the lead to 78-74. At the 7:03 mark, Ryan Kelly went to the line again for the Red Claws, this time converting 2-2 and pushing Maine’s lead out to 83-80. With 3:44 left in the game, on assignment from the Boston Celtics, Demetrius Jackson went to the line for 2, connecting on only the second, leaving Maine behind Greensboro 92-91. At 1:30 the Swarm were up by 2, 96-94 before a costly traveling violation by Xavier Munford. This one came right down to the wire, but Greensboro would hold on to win 98-97.

Maine finished the game 33/79 (41.8%) from the floor and 21/28 (75.0%) from the line. Leading the way for Maine was new comer Ryan Kelly who had 20 points on 5/14 shooting, and 9/12 from the charity stripe. Abdel Nader who had 15 of his 19 points in the first half, finished 7/15 from the floor and 2/3 from the line.

Greensboro was 38/95 (40%) from the field and 17/26 (65.4%) from the line. Rasheed Sulaimon was the Swarm’s high scorer, pouring in 20 points on 8?16 shooting and 2/2 from the line. Perry Ellis came off the bench and added 19 of his own on 6/16 shooting and 6/6 from the line.
