ROCKLAND — The former manager of the spa at the Trade Winds Inn was arrested Thursday and charged with stealing more than $200,000 from the health club.
Michael Morrison, 40, of Rockland was charged with theft by deception, according to paperwork filed in Knox County Unified Court.
He was arrested in Belfast, taken to the Waldo County Jail and released on bail Thursday afternoon, according to the jail.
His arrest follows an investigation by Rockland police that began in July, when the inn’s president reported that financial irregularities had been found at the fitness center. Among the irregularities was that no cash deposits had been generated from the club’s tanning equipment.
An internal review found that Morrison was making purchases through Amazon with the company credit card of items supposedly for the fitness center, but that were delivered to his home, including sporting equipment, according to the affidavit.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office was also investigating $123,000 in overbilling paid to the fitness center through the state’s MaineCare program. That alleged theft began in 2010, according to police.
In addition, the health club reported a loss of about $128,000 starting in 2010 while Morrison was managing it, according to the affidavit.
The review also found that $19,125 in personal items were purchased by Morrison with the business’ credit card from 2014 through June 2016, according to the affidavit.
When Trade Winds management began its investigation, it researched newspaper archives and found that Morrison had been accused in 2003 of involvement in missing money from a bank where he worked.
In 2003, Banknorth sued Morrison, seeking reimbursement of $10,225. He countersued for defamation against the bank. That lawsuit was dismissed later that year.
