CASTLETON, Vt. — Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball fell to Castleton University, 63-53 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Glenbrook Gym.
The Mariners outscored the Spartans 13-12 in the third quarter, to cut the deficit to 38-35. Castleton scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take a 10-point lead with 5:24 remaining. The Spartans took a 15-point lead at 1:27 (57-42), but the Mariners continued to fight, using a three-point play from Ogden to close the gap to 12 points with 50 seconds to go and a four-point run, capped off by a steal by Kristi Willey of Topsham that led to a Emily Melick jump shot, to close the Spartans’ lead to 60-51.
In Friday’s game, Willey notched 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in a dominant 83- 28 win for the Mariners (8-8, 5-5).
Maine Maritime returns to action on tonight when it hosts UMaine-Fort Kent at 7 p.m.
