Cape Elizabeth police are hoping the state medical examiner will be able to identify a badly decomposed body found on Cliff House Beach on Tuesday night.

The body was discovered by a person who was walking on the town-owned beach at the end of Sea View Avenue around 7:45 p.m., said Police Chief Neil Williams.

“I’m awaiting information from the state Medical Examiner’s Office after they conduct their investigation,” Williams said Wednesday. “It could be a while.”

Williams said there was no apparent identification on the body, such as a driver’s license or credit cards. Police officers were able to determine that the person was white, he said, but the body is so decomposed they couldn’t tell whether it was a man or a woman.

The body has been taken to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for an autopsy. Maine State Police are assisting in the investigation.

Cape Elizabeth and South Portland don’t have any active missing person cases, Williams said. Portland has one recent missing person case, but it’s not believed to be a match because that person is black, said Lt. Robert Martin, Portland police spokesman.

Portland police are still looking for Evariste Munyensanga, 29, who was last seen Nov. 18, when he was dropped off at his Cumberland Avenue apartment about 4 p.m.

Munyensanga has not been seen by his roommates since that time, and he has not been active on social media.

“He’s a long-distance runner who used to like running along the coast and taking pictures around East End Beach, so there is a fear that he was in the water,” Martin said.

Munyensanga was a regular at the Portland YMCA and the Salvation Army Church. He is described as 6-foot-1, about 175 pounds and has short black hair and brown eyes. Munyensanga has a medical condition that requires him to take medication every day.

Anyone who has seen Munyensanga or has information about his whereabouts should call the Portland Police Department at 874-8575.
