LEWISTON — Coach Caitlin D’Amour was at home taking care of her infant daughter, but the Scarborough girls’ hockey team played like she was still behind the bench.
The Red Storm played a solid game, beating Cheverus 3-0 Monday afternoon at Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
“I am really proud of the girls,” said Scarborough assistant coach Jill Doherty. “They were composed. They played the systems. They were communicating. You really can’t ask for more out of your girls than to have a performance like that.”
It was the sixth consecutive win for the Red Storm (10-1-1).
The defending South champions took control of the game in the first period, building a 2-0 lead.
Courtney Brochu, a sophomore defenseman, opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game when she intercepted a clearing pass at the left point and sent a shot along the ice that deflected off the stick of Cheverus defenseman Abby Enck inside the near post.
Less than 10 minutes into the period, Lily Nygren finished off a rush down the right side by sending a rising shot from the circle under goalie Anna Smith’s glove into the left side of the goal.
“The first period was a tough period for us,” said Cheverus Coach Scott Rousseau said. “They played like a team that knew it was going to win and we played like a team that hoped it was going to win. We committed a few uncharacteristic turnovers.”
Rousseau, a former coach of Falmouth boys’ team in his first season with the Stags, liked how his team played during the first 10 minutes of the scoreless second period.
“We were phenomenal, and we really took it to them,” he said. “For a young team we showed a lot of growth and we flipped the switch.”
Cheverus (5-7) held an 8-1 edge in shots during that segment of the game.
“We had good scoring chances, but their goalie held the fort for them,” Rousseau said.
Five minutes into the period, Scarborough goalie Lucca Sterrer stopped Abby Lamontagne after she got a step on a defender while gliding through the left circle.
Three minutes later, she brushed the puck away when Caitlin Wolff tried to put a backhander in from just outside the crease.
“Cheverus certainly tested her skills,” Doherty said. “She showed up every time and made some nice saves.”
Sterrer made 20 saves to post her fourth shutout of the season.
“Lucca had a real solid performance,” Doherty said. “She had good angles. She challenged the play. She stayed focus the whole game.”
During the last four minutes of the second period, Cheverus killed off the first power play of the game, holding the Red Storm without a shot on goal.
The Red Storm completed the scoring less than a minute into the third period when Lauren Topchik finished off a four-shot flurry with a shot from the slot.
With less than 10 minutes left in the game, the Stags went on their only power play of the game when Wolff was tripped up on a breakaway, but Sterrer used her pads to redirect two long-range shots while they skated with a man advantage.
