South Berwick native Devin Powell lost his UFC mixed martial arts debut by unanimous decision Sunday night in Phoenix.
Drakkar Klose of South Haven, Michigan, also making his UFC debut, won all three five-minute rounds on all three scorecards, controlling Powell by being able to consistently gain the advantage in clinches along the edge of the cage. Klose also had large advantages in total strikes (46-7) and significant strikes (25-7).
Klose, who trains in Arizona, improved to 7-0-1 as a professional. Powell, who lives in Wells and trains out of his own gym in Somersworth, New Hampshire, is now 8-2 as a professional fighter.
SKIING
WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Christine Scheyer of Austria upset the prerace favorites to win a downhill in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, while Lindsey Vonn placed 13th in her first race in nearly 11 months.
Not being able to push out of the start gate as usual, Vonn was more than half a second off the lead at the first split and finished 1.54 behind Scheyer.
“I have a little start routine with my poles and I couldn’t really do that with my right hand,” Vonn said. “I also kind of lost grip on my pole after the last jump.”
The four-time overall champion, who holds the women’s record of 76 victories, hadn’t raced since February last year because of a knee injury and a broken right arm. The fracture in her right upper arm also damaged nerves, which is still limiting mobility of her hand.
MEN’S WORLD CUP: Henrik Kristoffersen’s hot streak in slalom extended to a fourth win, and Marcel Hirscher was runner-up again, in Wengen, Switzerland.
Defending a first-run lead, Kristoffersen was slower than Hirscher at the last time check but the Norwegian raced through the final gates for a 0.15 seconds winning margin.
Felix Neureuther of Germany was 0.63 back in third.
Kristoffersen leads the slalom standings ahead of Hirscher, who has been runner-up in three of his rival’s victories.
Still, Hirscher extended his clear lead in the overall standings, with Kristoffersen rising to second.
Kristoffersen also won last Sunday at nearby Adelboden and completed back-to-back wins at the Swiss venues for the second straight year.

Ethiopia’s Meskerem Assefa earned her first marathon victory, taking the women’s title. Assefa defeated the defending champion, Biruktayit Degefa, with a time of 2:30:18.
