KENNEBUNK — Madeline Suhr posted a double-double while leading Brunswick to a 51-47 overtime victory against Kennebunk in Class A South girls’ basketball game Friday night.
Suhr scored 11 points to go with 12 rebounds.
“I just knew we needed to get the win. I saw Sabrina (Armstrong)’s shots weren’t falling so I had to step it up on offense,” said Suhr.
The senior forward added four blocks.
“That’s what Madeline does. She doesn’t worry about points, but she’s going to affect shots, she’s going to rebound, and she’s going to control the ball,” said Brunswick Coach Sam Farrell.
Kennebunk (5-4) took a 40-39 lead on a bucket by Gabrielle Fogg (15 points) with 2:03 left in the fourth quarter.
Brunswick (7-2) answered when Charlotte MacMillan, who led the Dragons with 15 points, hit a jumper from the top of the key with 1:28 remaining.
On the ensuing possession, Armstrong ran through a screen set by Kennebunk senior Madison Lux, knocking Lux to the ground. No whistle was blown so play continued, but Lux got up and ran into Armstrong, knocking her to the floor and picking up an intentional foul. Armstrong made one of the two free throws, and Brunswick was unable to capitalize on its ensuing possession.
“That was a big one,” said Kennebunk Coach Rob Sullivan.
With 15 seconds remaining and Brunswick inbounding the ball, Marran Oakman stole the inbounds pass and the Rams called a timeout. Sierra Tartre (13 points) took the inbounds pass, streaked down the court and took it all the way for a tying layup with six seconds to go.
In overtime, Brunswick won the tip and MacMillan immediately cruised in for a layup.
With Brunswick protecting a 46-45 lead, Armstrong took a pass from Suhr and buried a shot from well behind the 3-point arc, giving the Dragons a four-point cushion with 28 seconds left.
“Madeline has good court vision, she always finds a way to get her teammates open. I haven’t really been shooting well, so for that to go in is a confidence booster,” said Armstrong.
“Sabrina hit (that shot) from York,” said Farrell.
Armstrong scored eight of her nine points in the second half and overtime.
“Our kids knew they had to do all the little things all game long. I’d say we did all the little things 28 out of the 32 minutes (in regulation). That’s not good enough against a team with that talent,” said Sullivan.
Kennebunk runs a 2-3 zone defense, which sometimes can make it hard to box out on the boards. Brunswick grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, leading to 19 second-chance points.
“We’re a zone team because of our size. If we played (Brunswick) man-to-man all game long we would have been in trouble,” said Sullivan. “I think we did a lot of good stuff (tonight).”
