Members of the Graziano family who had to close their famous Lisbon restaurant after serving Italian cuisine for more than four decades, are bringing back Graziano’s Casa Mia for two nights only, later this month.

Sorry, the pop-up restaurant evenings are full. The spaces filled up immediately. The Graziano’s Casa Mia Facebook page announced Dec. 18 the dates, times and menus for the pop- up restaurants, and stated that reservations could be made starting Dec. 21 at 10 a.m.

Mary Graziano’s father, Joe, opened the restaurant in 1969. His parents came from Italy and he grew up with his uncle who owned a restaurant and taught boxing. He brought those experiences with him to Maine when he opened Graziano’s and made the recipes of his youth his own.

Graziano’s closed in March 2012 after a 43-year-run. Graziano said it wasn’t an easy decision to make or one with planning. The family found they couldn’t afford the oil for heat or keep ahead of the other expenses that come with running a restaurant.

“It wasn’t what we wanted to do, and in any other circumstances probably would have handled it different,” she said. “It was what we had to do.”

Graziano now works at Henry and Marty Restaurant on Maine Street in Brunswick, owned by Aaron Park and Paul Hollingsworth.

When Park approached her about doing a pop-up, she left the decision up to her brother, Joe Graziano. She, her brother and his wife had run Graziano’s together at the end. Her brother decided, “ Why not?”

Joe developed the menus around what would work best using the kitchen at Henry and Marty Restaurant where the magic will happen. They wanted to keep the event small and have two separate menus for each night offering restaurant favorites.

The pop-up restaurants are Jan. 9 and Jan. 23 from 5 to 9 p.m. The menu features items such as spaghetti with meatball and sausage, Fettuccine Alfredo, Lasagna, Chicken Parmigiana, Char-grilled Ribeye Pizziaola, Veal Picante, Seafood Marinara and more; and Tiramisu and Cannoli for dessert.

Once the clock struck 10 a.m. on Dec. 21, Graziano said her phone didn’t stop ringing — and still hasn’t — but the limited seating was filled within about an hour.

“ It’s been a crazy response,” she said.

The official announcement with details posted on the Facebook page got 170 shares, thousands of views, and many comments. One fan said, “ I’d love to see Graziano’s pop up six days a week … every week … until the end of time.”

However Graziano stressed that although there are rumors circulating, Graziano’s is not reopening. The family was asked if they’d like to try doing the pop up, which they are doing for the two nights. They are not committing to anything more.

She is both nervous and excited. Some of the Graziano staff will return to help pull off what they hope will be as authentic an experience as they can make it.

“ We’re not using our equipment and our own area,” she said. “We hope it goes as smoothly as it can.”

The pop-up has drawn a huge response, as people continue to try to get seats and have shared memories of Graziano’s.

This is testimony to her father and how he kept the place going, Graziano said.

“It was very humbling to get that response,” she said.
