CASCO — Law enforcement officers Monday arrested a Sebago man in the hit and run that claimed the life of a Casco woman Sunday.

Cumberland County Sheriff Office detectives accompanied by the Office of Probation and Parole arrested

Jeffrey Eugune Smith, 28, of Intervale Street in Sebago was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident resulting in death, a Class C crime, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith was being held at the  Cumberland County Jail in Portland.

The victim was identified as Lorna Nugent of Casco, 56, who was struck and killed around 6 p.m. Dec. 18 on Route 302 in Casco near the Naples line.

Acting on a public tip, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department detectives Monday afternoon located a vehicle that matched the description of the one suspected in the hit and run.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a previous press release that evidence at the scene had led detectives to believe the vehicle involved is a 2001-2005 Volkswagon Passat with “significant front end damage.”

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine said in a statement Monday that the hit and run marks the 16th fatality of a pedestrian or bicyclist in Maine this year.

“The incident again highlights the need for all people driving motor vehicles to watch for other users at all times and places, to obey local speed limits, and never to drive distracted or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs,” the coalition said.

The hit and run investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to call Det. John Fournier at 774-1444, ext. 2173.
