CASCO—Acting on a tip, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department detectives said Monday afternoon they have located a vehicle that they believe was involved in a hit and run that killed a Casco woman Sunday.

County detectives say they have identified a person of interest, but there were no charges or arrests late Monday afternoon.

Lorna Nugent of Casco, 56, was struck and killed around 6 p.m. Dec. 18 on Route 302 in Casco near the Naples line.

The Sheriff’s Office said earlier Monday that evidence at the scene had led detectives to believe the vehicle is a 2001-05 Volkswagon Passat with “significant front-end damage.” The office said later Monday that evidence on the car they located leads them to believe it is “actually the VW Passat involved in the fatal hit and run.”

The incident closed Route 302 for several hours.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine said in a statement Monday it is monitoring the situation, which marks the 16th fatality of a pedestrian or bicyclist in Maine this year.

“The incident again highlights the need for all people driving motor vehicles to watch for other users at all times and places, to obey local speed limits, and never to drive distracted or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs,” the coalition said.

Anyone with information about the Casco hit and run is still urged to call Det. John Fournier at 774-1444, ext. 2173.
