A fire in a condominium in Brunswick severely injured a man in a wheelchair Friday afternoon.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office said Thomas Soucy, 62, was adding a log to his wood stove at his condominium on Willow Grove when his pants caught fire. The fire spread over most of his body and the wheelchair he uses, leaving him with serious burns.
Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant said Soucy called for help a little before 1 p.m. through Lifeline, an emergency call service. Brillant said Soucy was strapped to his chair with a seat belt and firefighters had to use a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.
Brillant said Soucy was “very severely burned on the lower half of his body.”
Firefighters put out the fire and got Soucy out. He was flown via LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was listed in critical condition Friday night.
Brillant said the fire marshal’s office and Brunswick police worked with the fire department to determine the cause of the fire.
There was no damage to Soucy’s condominium.
