A brief standoff ended peacefully Saturday afternoon in Lewiston.

Lt. Kelly Hamel said Lewiston police received a call at 3:20 p.m. about a man in distress in the parking lot of the Olive Branch Cafe on Lisbon Street.

“He was armed with a handgun, and he was making claims that he was going to harm himself,” Hamel said.

The man, who is not being identified, did not make threats against anyone else. The nearby street was closed, and surrounding businesses were locked down.

When police made contact with him, the man surrendered himself and his weapon. The entire incident lasted less than an hour.

“He was transported by the police department to an unnamed medical center for crisis intervention,” Hamel said.

Hamel said he does not know how the man obtained the gun, and he is not facing criminal charges at this time.
