A Portland man has been indicted on four charges, including attempted murder, for his alleged involvement in a shooting and stabbing in the city’s Old Port last November.
Moses Okut, 28, was arrested last on Nov. 16, 2015, near the site of the incident. Okot was arrested initially on a probation violation and is being held by federal authorities on a charge of being a felon in possession of a handgun.
The Cumberland County indictment was announced Tuesday.
A grand jury indicted Okot on charges of aggravated attempted murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a firearm. The charges were elevated to “aggravated” status because Okot had been convicted previously of felony murder, said Jennifer Ackerman, a Cumberland County deputy district attorney.
In 2011, Okot pleaded guilty to being the driver of a getaway car after a fatal shooting in Portland’s Parkside neighborhood. He was sentenced to serve three years of a 10-year prison term in that case, with 16 months credit for time served. He was also sentenced to probation that was to run through June 2017.
Okot was arrested a few minutes after the November 2015 incident by a Portland police officer who was patrolling the Old Port at the time. Police said Okot had gunpowder residue on his hand and there was a gun on the floor of the car he was in.
Mekonnen Berhe, then 22, and Eric Malonda, then 21, recovered from wounds suffered in the shooting.
