A gas leak caused the closure of Main Street and some evacuations early Monday morning after a construction crew struck a gas line on Dunn Street.
According to Westbrook Fire Chief Andrew Turcotte, the gas leak was first reported at about 8 a.m. Monday, after the crew working on sewer upgrades on the road accidentally hit the gas main. Turcotte said fire and rescue crews established a “hot zone” and metered the area, also evacuating 10 residents in nearby buildings.
The road closure caused big delays for morning commuters, but was resolved quickly.
“The gas was already self-venting, so we waited until Unitil arrived on scene to secure the line,” Turcotte said, adding that the broken pipe was replaced, and Main Street was reopened shortly after. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries, he said.
