Two brothers were arrested Thursday in connection with what Windham police describe as brutal assaults on two women.
One of the women remained hospitalized after being severely beaten, police said.
James B. Lewis and Alexander Lewis, 26-year-old twins from Windham, are charged with aggravated assault, said Windham police Lt. James Boudreau.
James Lewis faces two counts of aggravated assault and was being held Thursday night at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland on $35,000 cash bail.
There is no bail set for Alexander Lewis, who is charged with one count of aggravated assault and is also being held in the jail.
Court dates have not been set for the men.
Windham police said in a news release that the attacks happened in two locations and involved two women. Police are not identifying the victims, but said one woman suffered severe injuries.
Boudreau said police were called to a home on Falmouth Road around 1:30 a.m. to investigate a report of an assault. Officers found a woman in her 20s who had been “severely beaten with head, neck, chest and back injuries.”
The woman, who also suffered a broken arm, remained hospitalized Thursday night.
Police allege that both men were involved in that assault.
Police also received a call from a woman saying she had been assaulted around 10 a.m. Thursday on Brown Cove Road. That woman suffered head and back injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, police said.
Officers saw a truck going away from the Brown Cove Road home and pursued it. The driver pulled into a convenience store on Tandberg Trail and ran off. After an hourlong manhunt, James Lewis, of 54 Brown Cove Road, was arrested.
Windham police said they determined that James Lewis also was involved in the Falmouth Road assault, along with his brother. Alexander Lewis, who is charged only in connection with the Falmouth Road assault, was arrested at the jail in Portland when he tried to bail out his brother.
Windham police said they will not release any more information.
