While Scarborough’s reign over the Class A boys’ cross country world came to an end last weekend, there were still many local highlights at the state meet in Belfast.

The Red Storm had 170 points and came in seventh in Class A (Falmouth won the title with 72 points), while South Portland (340) placed 15th.

Scarborough was led by Shamus Malia (12th, 16 minutes, 32.71 seconds) and Connor Coffin (13th, 16:33.53). Also scoring were Luke Grover (33rd, 17:18.13), Erik Larkin (47th, 17:47.86) and Harrison Osborn (65th, 18:12.81).

Scarborough’s 13-year stretch of top four or better state finishes came to an end.

South Portland was paced by Xander Keiter, who was 30th in 17:14.91. Also scoring were Steven Smith (59th, 18:02.54), Layton Steele (76th, 18:29.73), Jack Kingsley (86th, 19:00.01) and Daniel Woodhouse (89th, 19:10.63).

The Red Riots finished 15th for the second year in a row.

In the Class A girls’ meet, Bonny Eagle was first with 77 points. Scarborough (198) finished 10th and South Portland didn’t qualify.

The Red Storm were led by Bethany Sholl, who placed eighth in 19:42.61. Also scoring were Ryanne Cox (33rd, 21:20.98), Samantha Saraceno (36th, 21:24.51), Marisa Carbone (51st, 21:43.19) and Anna Gardner (70th, 22:34.98).

South Portland missed the state meet for the first time since 2008.

In Class B, Cape Elizabeth’s girls tallied 118 points to come in fourth (Greely won the title with 71). The Capers were paced by Camilla Grosso (13th, 19:53.35), Emma Shedd (15th, 19:57.57), Kelsey Kennedy (19th, 20:09.92), Liv Palma (27th, 20:33.33) and Addie Hayes (44th, 21:35.32). 

The Capers finished in the top five for the fourth year in a row.

In the Class B boys’ meet, also won by Greely with 66 points, the Capers (168) came in fifth. Cape Elizabeth was led by freshman Jack Bassett (18th, 17:28.04) and Mac Huffard (19th, 17:31.73). Also scoring were Arsen Scheindel (34th, 17:53.06), Aidan Willitts (44th, 18:02.64) and Will Corsello (53rd, 18:18.76).

The Capers moved up one spot from last year.

New Englands

The New England championship meet is Saturday in North Scituate, Rhode Island.

Scarborough’s Coffin, Malia and Sholl all qualified as individuals.
