Rep. Mike McClellan, R-Raymond, is facing a challenge from Jessica Fay, a Democrat from Raymond, for his seat representing House District 66.

The district covers parts of Casco, Raymond and Poland.

McClellan, 56, is executive director of the Maine Statewide Independent Living Council. He has served three terms as a state representative.

“We have been able to move Maine forward in the past few years with tax reduction, welfare reform and other positive moves,” he said in responses to a Portland Press Herald survey.

McClellan opposes the ballot proposals to expand background checks for gun purchases, raise Maine’s minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020 and legalize the recreational use of marijuana.

Fay, 48, is the owner of Maine Lakes Wedding and Event Florist. She said she is running to be an advocate for small businesses.

“As the owner of a small business, I understand that we need to do more to encourage Maine businesses and entrepreneurs to grow and create good paying jobs,” she said in her responses to the survey.

Fay said she wants to expand background checks for gun sales, but she has concerns about the wording of Question 3 and its impact on gun owners in Maine. She will vote for an increase in the minimum wage. While she supports the legalization of recreational marijuana, she has concerns about that proposal and would rather see the issue vetted by the Legislature.
