Republican Rep. Susan Austin of Gray is facing off against Democrat Rachel Lyn Rumson in House District 67.

The district covers Frye Island and parts of Casco, Gray and Raymond.

Austin served four terms as a state representative from 2002 to 2010. In 2014, she returned to the Legislature as a representative of the newly drawn District 67. She returned to the Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee, and she said she would hope to continue her work there in another term.

“It has fascinating yet serious issues and I think I bring a sensible head to the table,” she said.

Austin opposes ballot proposals to expand background checks for gun purchases, raise Maine’s minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020 and legalize the recreational use of marijuana.

Rumson works as an innkeeper at the George Perley House in Gray and serves on the town’s planning board.

“There are a lot of people like me that are not represented in politics,” Rumson said. “People are working paycheck to paycheck, raising a family … struggling to run small businesses.”

On the Nov. 8 ballot, Rumson said she will vote in favor of expanding background checks for privately sold firearms and raising the state’s minimum wage. She said she supports legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, but will vote against Question 1 because she believes its design opens Maine’s market to big corporations rather than local businesses.
