Rep. Donald Marean, R-Hollis, is running to defend his House District 16 seat against River Payne, a Democrat from Hollis.

The district covers Hollis, part of Buxton and part of Saco.

Marean has served a total of four terms in the Maine House, and has served in the past as a Hollis selectman. He is the owner of a horse farm.

He did not respond to survey questions about him and his stands on key issues.

Payne, 46, is a nurse and chairwoman of the Hollis Select Board. Payne said in her responses to a Portland Press Herald survey that she got more involved in politics when the state rejected Medicaid expansion, a decision that she says harmed people who lack other health care coverage. She said that she wants to reverse state decisions that have shifted financial burdens onto towns, and that she wants to ensure children have a sound education.

Payne said she supports expanded background checks for gun purchases and supports the ballot proposal to raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020. She said she has mixed feelings about legalizing marijuana because of the contradicting messages to young people.
