TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat Middle School “A” field hockey team recently completed a solid 9-1 season.
On Tuesday, the Eagles came away with a 1-0 “Battle of the Bridge” over Brunswick. After a scoreless first half, Mt. Ararat scored the lone goal as Hannah Huston connected with Paige Witwicki.
Both teams produced several scoring chances from there, but both goalies came up big along with their defenses.
For Mt. Ararat, forwards Huston, Brynn Charron and Emelia McKenney played well, along with strong midfield play from Maddie Delaurio, Gracie Morrell and Megan Reed. Defenders Jaimey Weidner, Annie Wilkins, Ashlynn Beebe, Kayli Wing and Nevaeh Colby all worked hard, and goalies Bailey Rioux and Leah Newcomb combined for 10 saves. Brunswick finished with a 10-4 edge in penalty corners.
In the season finale on Thursday, Mt. Ararat another 1-0 win over Oxford Hills.
Scoreless in the second half despite the Eagles dominating possession, Mt. Ararat found the back of the net when Tess Hahesy tipped a ball into the goal for her first tally of the season. Witwicki and McKenney assisted.
Charron, Huston, McKenney, Jazzy Hunstman, Witwicki and Hahesy, along with midfielders Annie Wilkins, Brook Vermette, Delaurio, Greta Marchildon and Morrell had a solid game. Defenders helping to pitch another shutout were Wing, Weidner, Beebe and Colby. Rioux and Newcomb each made key saves in the win.
