Why are you running for a seat on the Brunswick School Board?
I am running for a seat on the school board because it is important to me to be a part of my son’s education. I have been very involved in the schools since he started kindergarten at Coffin Elementary in 2010. I have served for four years on various boards for the parent groups at both Coffin and Harriet Beecher Stowe. I have volunteered in the classrooms, in the Coffin library, and have chaperoned numerous field trips. I feel I will be an effective team player, working closely with the members of the school board to help preserve what has been working in Brunswick’s school, and also to help improve the quality of Brunswick’s schools.
How do you think the school department’s facility needs should be addressed?
I think the school department’s facility needs should be addressed by looking at all possible options. I think all options should be researched before decisions are made. I am also a tax payer in Brunswick (have been since 1999) and I am in favor for looking at the best, efficient solutions that make sense. I am in support of the new elementary school, as I do not believe “simply” repairing Coffin is a viable option.
Do you feel like Question 2 on the state ballot is an effective way to help fund public education?
I feel like Question 2 on the state ballot is an effective way to fund public education. As I understand it, the funds raised would go to all school districts, allowing schools in less wealthy districts to also receive funding. Budget cuts in our school systems effect everyone, especially the students. These deficits need to be addressed. Important school programs such as music, art and technical education should not be in jeopardy due to budget cuts.
