There are few public officials who are as energetic and committed as Portland’s District 3 City Councilor Ed Suslovic. There also aren’t many who appear to love their work as much as he does.
We endorse him for a third term.
We have disagreed with Suslovic at times, and he has taken stands unpopular with his colleagues. But no one has ever said that he failed to do his homework and did not look for creative solutions to difficult problems.
Suslovic has been a leader in the movement to regionalize services, a slow and painstaking process that does not yield quick results or flashy headlines.
But his work with organizations like the Greater Portland Council of Governments and METRO transportation has been worthwhile, as evidenced by programs like the new bus routes to Freeport and Yarmouth. Another term on the council would be an opportunity to continue that work.
Suslovic’s opponent, Brian Batson, is an impressive person, a nurse at Maine Medical Center who would bring a different perspective to some of the city’s most pressing challenges, such as the transition of services from the India Street clinic to Greater Portland Health.
We don’t think he has the experience to join the City Council right now, but we hope Batson runs for office again because he has a lot to offer.
This year, we endorse Suslovic for another term.
