Parts of Maine are about to get their first significant snowfall of the season, even though winter doesn’t officially start until Dec. 21.

The storm will move from the west into Maine on Thursday and snow should start to fall over areas north of Rangeley, Farmington and Jackman on Thursday night. Those mountainous regions could see between 1 and 4 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service office in Gray.

“We’ve got some snow in the forecast for Thursday night,” said meteorologist Chris Kimble. “It will be the first significant snowfall of the season.”

Meanwhile, Portland and southern coastal Maine won’t get snow, but steady, heavy rain will begin Thursday evening and could drop as much as 1.5 inches on Portland by the time the storm ends Friday.

Kimble said snow accumulation, at least in northern Maine, is not unusual at this time of year.
