BRUNSWICK

If you haven’t toured the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum in Brunswick, owned and operated by Pejepscot Historical Society, you still have a few weekends left to see the treasures inside before it closes for the winter.

Now operating on a reduced schedule, the museum offers guided tours on the hour Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. The last tour leaves at 3 p.m. The final open weekend is Veterans’ Day weekend, Nov. 11-13.

On that weekend, PHS will offer free admission to all veterans, active military, and their families. In addition, several Chamberlain collection items normally kept in storage—including artwork and memorabilia— will be on display, the museum shop will have an end-of-season sale, and refreshments will be served. Frosty’s Donuts has generously offered to contribute donuts for Friday and Saturday morning.

“Although we offer a regular discount during the season to vets and active military, this free weekend is our way of saying an extra thank-you,” says PHS Executive Director Larissa Vigue Picard. “Chamberlain himself felt strongly about supporting veterans— not only those with whom he served, but anyone who gave of themselves for their country. We want to carry on that tradition.”

While Chamberlain is best known for his leadership of the 20th Maine Regiment at Gettysburg during the Civil War, he was also president of Bowdoin College in his later years and Governor of Maine for four one-year terms.

The house contains his Gettysburg boots, horse’s saddle, original medal of honor, Governor’s chair, family furniture, books owned by Chamberlain, and many other items. Newly acquired this fall thanks to a private donor, and on display now, is the original silver nameplate that hung on the front door.

The Chamberlain Museum will also be open for a special holiday program on the afternoon of December 3, with seatings at 1PM and 3PM. A talk in the parlor about the Chamberlain family’s Christmas celebrations and 19th century holiday traditions will be followed by a short tour of the house. Rooms will be decorated according to different time periods and refreshments will be served. More information, including ticketing details, will be on the PHS website by early November.
