YORK — Research conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice estimates that one in 10 seniors is a victim of financial abuse each year, losing nearly $3 billion annually due to financial exploitation.
In an effort to educate elders and their families about how to protect themselves from unscrupulous individuals and a variety of scams, two Maine parishes will host a program entitled “Preventing Elder Abuse and Financial Exploitation.”
The presentations will be hosted by Judith Shaw, the securities administrator for the Maine Office of Securities.
There will be one at 2 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord St. Christopher Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York.
The program will educate those gathered on why seniors are the “perfect targets” for exploitation, provide information and resources on how to identify possible elder abuse and financial exploitation, and present the steps to take to protect themselves and others.
