Animal lovers are rallying around a veterinarian technician who lost her pets and her belongings and who was badly burned in a recent fire.
Amanda Wrobel, 32, remains in a medically induced coma at Maine Medical Center with burns on 40 percent of her body as a result of the Oct. 15 fire at her home on Summer Street in Lisbon.
Two dogs survived the fire, but are being treated for burns.
The fire started in the kitchen, but investigators are still working on exactly how and where it originated, according to Lisbon Fire Chief Sean Galipeau.
Wrobel has support from family with whom she can stay once she’s eventually released from the hospital.
Wrobel she lost dogs, cats and rats in the fire. “I’m sure this will be a huge loss for her,” said Sarah Simkowitz of Androscoggin Animal Hospital in Topsham, where Wrobel works.
Supporters are using the slogan “Amanda Strong” and staff have been wearing pink in honor of Wrobel, who, according to the animal hospital’s Facebook page, rescued at least one of the dogs who was burned from the fire.
In addition to her work as a vet tech, Wrobel is known for rescuing and fostering dogs.
“She is definitely well known in the community,” said Simkowitz.
A GoFundMe page created by Wrobel’s neighbor has generated more than $29,700 as of 7 a.m. this morning. An Amanda Strong Facebook page is providing updates.
A yard sale/bake sale to benefit Wrobel will take place Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the animal hospital at 457 Foreside Road. Items include camping gear, DVDs and clothing. A a pastry chef will sell baked goods, and a canine therapist will offer dog massages by donation.
Funds raised will help support Wrobel financially while she is out of work and recovering, and will help her replenish her belongings lost in the fire.
“It’s a great cause,” Simkowitz said. “Amanda has done wonders for the community helping people with their pets. … She’s saved lives fostering. She’s made it possible for dogs to come up here from the south and get adopted and will just do anything for anyone in any time of need. Now it’s our time to help her.”
Another fundraiser will take place Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Coastal Humane Society’s administrative building at 190 Pleasant St. in Brunswick. Four LuLaRoe consultants will hold a Pop- Up Clothing Boutique from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day to benefit Wrobel.
LuLaRoe consultant Kara Dowling said she has not met Wrobel, but said they have many mutual friends.
“I want to cry every time I think about what happened to her and what she has ahead of her,” Dowling said.
Dowling said LuLaRoe will match funds raised at the Pop-Up event. She said $2 leggings and $4 for other items purchased will go to Wrobel. Starting at 9 p.m. Oct. 30 ,there will be an online sale of more LuLaRoe items.
