In response to complaints about the disturbance created by consumer fireworks in Windham, the Town Council is considering restrictions on their use.
The draft of the new fireworks ordinance, discussed at a council meeting on Oct. 4, would restrict the days that fireworks can be set off and require residents to obtain a permit from Windham Fire-Rescue before using fireworks.
A second discussion and vote on the restrictions is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Fireworks would be allowed from noon-10 p.m. on July 3 and 4, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and every Saturday, under the proposal.
Improper use would result in fines of $200-$400 for first violations and $300-$600 for subsequent violations.
At the meeting Tuesday, the council also discussed adding a restriction to prevent people from releasing fireworks within 150 feet of a structure they do not own. Gorham has a similar ordinance in place.
Councilors David Nadeau, Robert Muir and Tim Nangle said the clause to allow fireworks every Saturday should be struck, while council Chairwoman Donna Chapman said fireworks should be allowed every Saturday. Councilors Dennis Welch and Roy Moore were absent.
The discussion followed a meeting on Sept. 20, where several residents said fireworks set off near their homes disturb their sleep and sense of safety.
