Raymond runners for a cause
Congratulations and kudos to two Raymond women who dedicated the last several months training to run in charity races. 

Kathleen Tolman has run four races since the end of August in order to train for a 5K and then two 10K races.  She is scheduled to run her first half-marathon this Sunday in Nantucket.     

Ellen Gagne set up “Team Dotty” for the Patrick Dempsey Challenge in honor of her mother who died this summer. Ellen’s husband joined her in the bike ride, along with her niece Jenna, who drove from Philadelphia to take part in raising money for the fight again cancer in honor or Dotty, her grandmother.

Local Republicans gathering

The Raymond Republicans have scheduled a short social event from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the Raymond Public Safety Building on Route 302. The event will provide the opportunity to meet Sue Austin (House 67), Mike McClellan (House 66) and Ryan McDonald (Senate 26), and for participants to discuss ways to support the incumbents and other Republican candidaates. This is not a fundraising event.

Drug Take-Back

The Cumberland County Sheriffs Office will conduct a Drug Take-Back event on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Raymond Public Safety Building,  1443 Roosevelt Trail.

Absentee ballots

Absentee ballots will be available next week at the Town Office. You can either request one be mailed to you or you can pick one up and vote there if you would like. The deadline for absentee voting is Nov. 3. For more information, contact Town Clerk Sue Look at 655-4742, ext. 121 or sue.look@raymondmaine.org

Mill Street closure

Mill Street is being widened to provide extra safety on the tight corner by Kings Grant.

Paving was scheduled to take place this week and extend into Friday, Oct 7, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mill Street will be closed to through traffic at that time. For more information, contact Public Works Director Nathan White at 653-3641.

Fire Rescue Citizen Academy

Raymond Fire and Rescue will introduce you the life of a firefighter/EMS provider at a Citizen Academy from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 at the public safety building, 1443 Roosevelt Trail. Morning Morning snacks and lunch will be provided.

The objective is to inform and educate citizens and officials to the mission of the RFRD and the challenges they face to meet their goals. The morning will be a “condensed” fire academy for new members. Join them to see the commitment and time provided to the town. Mock scenarios will include a cardiac arrest. See the Jaws of Life in action. Learn what it takes to become a member mentally and physically and the requirements of training and education, and learn about the function and use of the equipment.

RSVP to Chief Bruce Tupper at bruce.tupper@raymondmaine.org or 655-1187 no later than Monday, Oct. 10, so that they may plan events and food accordingly.

Property tax payments due

Property tax payments are due by Monday, Oct. 31. Payments may be mailed or brought to the Raymond Town Hall.

Halloween candy donations

Halloween is almost here and we expect another fabulous celebration in the village. Because of the large number of children from here and other neighboring towns, the Raymond Village Library will be accepting donations of candy for village residents to help them continue the tradition of providing a fun and memorable night. Please drop all donations (wrapped individual candy/treats only please) to the Raymond Village Library.

Loans for drought-related costs

Federal Economic Injury Disaster Loans are available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and private nonprofit organizations in Maine as a result of the drought that began on July 5, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

This disaster declaration includesCumberland, Oxford and York counties. 

The loan amount can be up to $2 million with interest rates of 2.625 percent for private nonprofit organizations and 4 percent for small businesses, with terms up to 30 years.

Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application via SBA’s secure website at www.disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

Disaster loan information and application forms may also be obtained by calling the SBA’s c ustomer service center at 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing) or by sending an email to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Loan applications can be downloaded from the SBA’s website at www.sba.gov/disaster. Completed applications should be mailed to: U.S. Small Business Administration, Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth, Texas, 76155.

Completed loan applications must be returned to SBA no later than May 1, 2017.
