BRUNSWICK — Brunswick played a nearly flawless first half and ran away with a 42-12 win over Brewer in a clash of unbeaten Class B North football teams Friday night.

Brewer (5-1) went into the game averaging more than 35 points per game, but the Witches were unable to keep up with the Dragons (6-0), who were averaging more than 55 points.

Scoring on five of its seven possessions, Brunswick held an insurmountable 36-0 at the end of the first half.

“Brunswick has unbelievable speed,” Brewer Coach Nick Arthers said. “We watched a ton of film and we thought we had a good game plan, (but) they really showed their speed. They played a better game tonight.”

It was Brunswick’s third straight victory against a previously undefeated opponent, by an average margin of almost 32 points.

The Brunswick defense limited the Witches to 74 yards and three first downs in the first half.

“The defense was awesome in the first half,” Brunswick Coach Dan Cooper said. “You have to maintain your blocks (because) they really flow to the ball.”

Brewer was also penalized 11 times for a total of 85 yards in the first two quarters.

“It was one of those things where we show up to play and a couple of things go wrong here and there, and they start piling on each other,” Arthers said.

Jesse Devereaux scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 7-yard run 3:30 into the game, capping a 7-play, 43-yard drive. The Dragons started with excellent field position after Ben Palizay’s 37-yard return on the opening kickoff.

Hunter Garrett made it 12-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter when he scored on a 3-yard run. It was another short drive, as the Dragons needed just four plays to go 53 yards. The big play was a 39-yard run by Garrett.

The Dragons scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to take firm control.

Play was much more even in the second half, but the 36-point deficit was too much for Brewer to overcome.

Brewer’s Ray Wood, who rushed for 161 yards on 34 carries, sandwiched touchdowns of 4 and 2 yards around a 2-yard scoring run by Devereaux early in the fourth quarter.

“We came out and played much better in the second half, and I like the heart that our team showed tonight,” Arthers said. “We told our guys on defense to find the ball (because) we were running past some guys (in the first half). On offense, we were missing a couple of key blocks. We started to get a few, and that made a couple of good holes.”

Almost a year ago to the day, the Witches pulled out a 34-27 win in Brunswick. A month later, the Dragons rolled over Brewer 49-0 to win the Class B North title for the second consecutive year.

“We’re feeling pretty happy, but we’re not satisfied,” Cooper said. “These kids really want to win the state championship. Until that happens, they’re going to keep working hard.”
