Multiple crashes have snarled traffic along Interstate 295 northbound in Portland and Falmouth on Thursday, the Maine Department of Transportation said.
Motorists are advised to avoid the roadway and seek alternate routes.
There are also multiple crashes on the Maine Turnpike in Portland.
Turnpike spokeswoman Erin Courtney said Maine State Police are responding to two crashes: the first was reported at about 4:40 p.m. in the northbound lanes near mile 47.
The second crash, involving three trucks of unknown size, was reported about a mile away at mile marker 48 in the median. All the vehicles were traveling north at the time of the crashes.
