A Biddeford Middle School student who was hit by a car while riding his bicycle to school Wednesday morning is expected to make a full recovery.

The 14-year-old student, whose name was not released, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland and held overnight for observation, his family told the police department. He was hit by a 2003 Dodge Caravan in the parking area of the John F. Kennedy School on West Street at 7:38 a.m., according to Biddeford Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk.

The driver of the van, Tiba Kamaluldeen, 29, was issued a civil infraction for violation of an instruction permit because she had not yet obtained a permanent driver’s license, Fisk said.

Anyone who drives with a learner’s permit is required to have a fully licensed passenger in the front seat at all times. Kamaluldeen was the only adult in the car.

The crash occurred when Kamaluldeen turned into the driveway of the school as the boy crossed the driveway on his bike. The child was trapped under the van until the Biddeford Fire Department arrived to free him.

Superintendent Jeremy Ray said the student was on his way to Biddeford Middle School, which is a short distance from the JFK school.

It was unclear how fast Kamaluldeen was driving at the time of the crash, and Fisk said the crash is still being reconstructed by police.
