OGUNQUIT — Construction on U.S. Route 1 resumed last week, as crews began the final phase of a major upgrade to roads through the downtown.
The Maine Department of Transportation said Sept. 8 that road construction will continue for four to six weeks as crews pave the downtown.
The DOT is advising motorists to slow down and exercise caution during construction, being sure to avoid pedestrians, cyclists and other cars.
The majority of the DOT project has already been completed, and includes two new bridges with sidewalks, two miles of road reconstruction, 61/2 miles of drainage work and nearly three miles of brick and paved sidewalks.
Crews will finish sidewalks and add streetlights and benches in the downtown over the next four months.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
