The Tigers looked to hand the Mustangs their first loss of the season, and came out strong in the opening 15 minutes of play.
Soon after a Massabesic timeout, Jacklyn Bearse would score two goals in less than three minutes to give the Mustangs the 2-0 advantage midway through the half.
“I saw Biddeford playing us very hard and pushing the tempo and beating us to the ball,” said Massabesic coach Michele Martin- Moore. “I think after I called the timeout we picked it up. The tempo was pretty even at the beginning of the game but we scored and started to pick things up.”
The Mustangs continued to cruise in the second half, scoring two more goals while also having two goals called back. Logan Champlin scored within the first five minutes of the half, followed by another goal from Emma Desrochers with 19 seconds remaining in regulation.
Martin-Moore was pleased with her team’s strong second-half showing.
“I think we played better in the second half. There were a couple of goals that could have been called but were not, but that happens. But I think we played much better in the second half,” said Martin-Moore.
Biddeford coach Caitlin Albert was proud of the way her young squad battled against one of the conference’s top teams.
“Going into it they knew that (Massabesic) was undefeated and it would be hard and they would have to play up a level. We’re a young team, I knew we would be able to match their intensity but it’s about overcoming that,” said Albert. “It makes me really proud to be their coach. It’s definitely encouraged that anyone can score. Our goal was to keep pushing, keep trying to get corners and we were able to get one. It’s always a battle against Massabesic, and in a few years we will be that team hopefully.”
The Tigers will continue to grind through their schedule in the upcoming weeks, and have a tall task at hand in their ensuing two games. Despite the tough schedule, Albert has faith that her team will continue to progress and make improvements.
“We have two tough matchups next against (Thornton Academy) and Marshwood. This game shows us what we need to do and it’s a lot of little things. The little things make the big things happen.”
As for the Mustangs – they hope to take each game at a time and prove just how good they can be.
“I try to remind them that every game is a new game, and what we did last game doesn’t carry anything into this game,” said Martin- Moore. “They are out to play us just as hard as any other team. It’s nice for our confidence, but every game starts at 0-0 and they need to earn every win.”
