Speakout for Nolan
On Thursday, Sept. 22, Bill Diamond will host Speakout on Windham’s local channel 7 at 7 p.m. Diamond will be discussing assistance efforts for little Nolan Desmond of Windham. Seven-month-old Nolan started chemotherapy at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston to remove two large tumors from behind both his eyes.You are welcome to call in with your questions during the show at 892-0546. You are also welcome to come to the Windham town office, council chambers, and be part of the audience.
Fall festival
The Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine will hold a Fall Festival and Campaign Kickoff from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Center Day Camp, 74 Hackett Road. Parking for this free family event will be in the Sebago Commons lot at the top of Basin Road, and transportation into camp is provided. Activities for all ages are planned, such as a diaper derby, face painting, a sampling of some of the JCA’s new adult and youth programming such as yoga and art. There also will be the opportunity to learn about local Jewish organizations, the programs of the JCA and the new facility that will open in the summer 2017 at 1342 Congress St. in Portland. The festival will begin with Maine Attorney General Janet Mills speaking about her recent trip to Israel and the legal system. Windham Safety Day
Windham Safety Day will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Windham Public Safety building and Family Resource Center/Food Pantry. AARP Maine will be offering free document shredding to help protect your identity and a seminar on scam awareness – especially scams directed toward the elderly. The Windham Police Department will have K9 demonstrations, provide tours of the Public Safety Building, and take-back prescription drugs for proper disposal. Windham’s Fire/Rescue Department will be on hand to give tours, have a touch-a-truck event and make people aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. There will also be a drive for the Food Pantry; please consider donating goods that the pantry cannot purchase like toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, shampoo, crème rinse, laundry detergent, dish detergent, toothpaste and feminine products. Windham’s Legislative delegation will be on hand to explain and answer questions about new Maine laws pertaining to safety and other issues. Light refreshments will be available.
Pickleball
Want an opportunity to join in on one of America’s fastest growing sports? Windham Parks & Recreation is offering Pickleball on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, at the Windham Town Hall gym. Bean supper
American Legion Post 148 will hold a baked bean supper Friday, Sept. 16, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Windham Veterans Center. The cost is $8; children under 12 eat free. Proceeds benefit the Legion scholarship fund.
Coffee break for vets
A Veterans Coffee Break is held every Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. at Windham Veterans Center. All veterans welcome to stop by and take a break from the day’s routine, visit with old or new friends and find out what’s new.
Jazz at church
The Bellamy Jazz Band will perform at North Windham Union Church at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, as part of the Music with a Mission program. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $12 and $10 for seniors. A chicken pie supper will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the First Parish Congregational Church, 1 Church Street (Route 114) in Gorham. Adults $20, children under 12, $5.
Evening Medicare Seminar
Southern Maine Agency on Aging will conduct a Welcome to Medicare Seminar Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 5:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Windham. This seminar offers participants valuable information presented in plain and understandable language and will cover all of the important basics, as well as options that may be useful in making enrollment decisions.
