GIRLS
Taylor Young, Cape Elizabeth field hockey: Young, a senior, scored two overtime goals this week as Cape Elizabeth snapped a 17-game losing streak that began in 2014. On Monday, Young scored twice in a 2-1 victory at Gray-New Gloucester. On Wednesday, Young struck again to give Cape Elizabeth a 3-2 victory over Greely.
Honorable mention
Abby Hamilton, Yarmouth cross country: A senior, Hamilton was the only girl to break 19 minutes in a five-school Western Maine Conference meet Friday, clocking 18:50 over three miles to lead the Clippers to victory by 16 points over host York and 36 over Falmouth.
McKenzie Murphy, Sacopee Valley soccer: A senior, Murphy had two goals and two assists for the Hawks (3-0) in a 6-0 victory over St. Dominic (1-3) on Tuesday. Murphy also scored twice in a 4-1 victory over Poland.
Lily Posternak, York field hockey: A senior center midfielder, Posternak notched three goals and an assist in two victories for the unbeaten Wildcats. She scored a tying goal late in the second half and the winner in overtime of a 2-1 victory over Kennebunk.
BOYS
John Henry Villanueva, Gray-New Gloucester soccer: A senior goalie, Villanueva made 10 saves – including one on a corner kick in the second overtime – to register his third shutout of the season in a 0-0 tie with Kennebunk on Tuesday. The Patriots (2-0-1) beat York 1-0 and Wells 2-0 to open the year. Villanueva has 24 total saves, one on a penalty kick against York. He had six shutouts last season.
Honorable mention
Hunter Graham, Greely soccer: A senior midfielder, Graham scored three goals to lead Greely over Fryeburg Academy 7-0 on Tuesday. Graham also broke a scoreless tie in a 2-0 victory over Kennebunk.
Michael Laverriere, Thornton Academy football: A senior quarterback, Laverriere directed nine straight scoring drives in Saturday’s 65-0 victory over Cheverus. Laverriere rushed for 149 yards on 10 carries with touchdown runs of 42 and 26 yards, and completed 7 of 11 passes for 94 yards and a score.
Jeremiah Sands, Falmouth cross country: A senior, Sands was the only boy in a field of 99 to break 17 minutes in a five-school Western Maine Conference meet at York, clocking 16:53 over three miles to lead Falmouth past Yarmouth by 34 points.
