Laura Stevens, the second-grade teacher at Kaler Elementary School in South Portland who recently won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, was honored with a surprise celebration ceremony at the school Monday morning. Banners on the front of the building and inside the building greeted Stevens, following her return from Washington, D.C., to collect her teaching honor. The entire school lined the hallways and cheered for her as she made her way to the lobby. One student from each classroom handed her a flower as Stevens made her way through the halls.
